Ali focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and transactions, with a focus on patent litigation and drafting. He is registered to practice before the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). He has litigated large patent cases involving cutting edge technologies including semiconductors, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and medical devices.

Mr. Shalchi obtained his B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from UCSD in 1998, where he completed several research projects on computer modeling of cardiac mechanics. He also received an M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering, with a focus on MEMS (MicroElectroMechanicalSystems) & Semiconductor Fabrication, from UCLA in 2002. While at UCLA, he worked in the BioMEMS research group, where he developed lab-on-a-chip technologies employing MEMS devices.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Shalchi worked as a medical device engineer at Medtronic Inc. He has also worked as a patent engineer, drafting high technology patents in a variety of fields including semiconductors, biomedical technology, electronics, mechanical and consumer products.

Ali was named as a Rising Star by Los Angeles Magazine’s Annual Super Lawyer publication in 2014 and 2015.

  • Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Inc. v. Chimei Innolux Corporation et al. (C.D. Cal.). Chimei Innolux Corporation et al. v. Semiconductor Engergy Laboratory Inc. (PTAB). Represented defendant LCD panel makers against patent infringement claims on 6 patents directed to thin-film transistor (TFT) technology used in LCD panels in District Court and in Inter Partes Review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
  • EMG Technology, LLC v. Dr. Pepper et al. (E.D. Tex). Represented the patentee in series of patent infringement cases relating to simplified navigation systems for Internet browsing on mobile devices.
  • Kaneka Corp. v. SKC Kolon PI & SKC, Inc. (International Trade Commission). Representing plaintiff in patent infringement case asserting infringement of four patents directed to methods for making high performance polyimide films used in electronic components.
  • Jardin v. Frost & Datallegro/Microsoft Corp. (S.D. Cal). Represented defendant in patent litigation relating to distributed database systems.
  • Datascape, Inc. v. Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Inc. & Kyocera Wireless Corp. (N.D. Ga.). Represented defendant cell phone makers in patent infringement lawsuits involving six patents relating to internet-enabled wireless devices.
  • MediaTek, Inc. v. Sanyo Elec. Co., Ltd. (E.D. Tex.). Represented plaintiff in a major patent infringement action concerning integrated chipset solutions for compressing video and audio data in various consumer electronics products.
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) v. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (N.D. Cal). Represented defendant chip maker in a major patent infringement and trade secret action brought by the world’s largest semiconductor foundry involving 14 patents covering semiconductor fabrication processes and SRAM designs.
  • Autobytel, Inc. v. Dealix Corp. (E.D. Tex.). Represented plaintiff in a patent infringement action concerning its e-commerce patent for the sale of automobiles over the internet.
  • Raindance Communications, Inc. v. WebEx Communications, Inc. (E.D. Tex.). Represented plaintiff in action alleging infringement of two patents covering technology for transmitting audio data over the internet and record/playback features for collaborative web browsing sessions.
